Student Complaints

For SARA questions and concerns please contact the State Authorization Coordinator. 

Students who have a complaint against the University of Utah should first file a complaint with the institution.

Students who have a complaint relating to issues that are covered by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities may follow the university’s process for filing a complaint.  The student code is found at http://regulations.utah.edu/academics/6-400.php.

If the University of Utah does not resolve the complaint, students located in Utah may follow the processes below to file a complaint with the Utah System of Higher Education, the Division of Consumer Protection, or the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

If the University of Utah does not resolve the complaint, students located in other states may file a complaint with the Utah SARA State Portal Entity through the Utah System of Higher Education website at https://ushe.edu/office-of-commissioner/state-authorization-ut-sara/. UT SARA is the final contact point for complaints about Utah SARA institutions resulting from distance education courses, activities, and operations outside of Utah. As the state portal agency, UT SARA serves as the final decision-maker on SARA-related complaints. Complaints related to other subjects may be referred to another agency or accreditor.

Students who have a complaint relating to unfair, deceptive, and/or fraudulent business practices may file a complaint with the Division of Consumer Protection found at https://consumerprotection.utah.gov/complaints.html.

Students who have a complaint relating to the university’s quality of education or other issues appropriate for its accrediting body to consider may file a complaint with the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities at www.nwccu.org.

Copies of documents describing the university’s accreditation and state approval are available for review upon request, registrar@utah.edu.
